DRILL DETROIT BEFORE DRILLING IN THE ARCTIC WILDLIFE REFUGE
IMPROVING FUEL ECONOMY SAVES MORE OIL THAN IS AVAILABLE IN THE REFUGE

Getting America's cars and trucks to travel farther with the same amount of fuel is an investment in America's energy future. By "drilling Detroit" we can discover greater quantities of oil than exist in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
  • Increasing the Corporate Average Fuel Economy Standards (CAFÉ) by 60% over the next 10 years could save 67 billion barrels of oil or 10 to 20 times the potential oil available in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge. This would set standards of 44 mpg for cars and 33 mpg for light trucks by 2012.
  • The National Academies of Science in a July 2001 report found that existing technologies if applied to cars and light trucks would significantly reduce America's fuel consumption. Indeed, carmakers are already using selling vehicles with these technologies in Europe and Japan where gasoline prices are higher.
  • Fuel economy improvements can be made without sacrificing automobile safety. Real gains in fuel economy can be achieved by using more efficient power trains which have no bearing on auto safety.
